Overview
The right size, the right efficiency, installed right
A new air conditioner is only as good as the crew that installs it. In North Louisiana's long, humid summers, an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves the house cold and clammy, while an undersized one runs nonstop and never catches up. Mark Johnson & Sons sizes every system with a Manual-J load calculation built on your actual square footage, insulation, windows, ductwork, and sun exposure — not a rule of thumb off the old unit's label.
We install and replace central AC systems, heat pumps, and ductless mini-splits across every efficiency tier, from a code-minimum 14.3 SEER2 unit to high-efficiency 18+ SEER2 systems that cut a Louisiana summer electric bill. We've done it since 1997 with our own licensed crew — no subcontractors — and every quote is flat-rate and given before we start, with financing available so a dead AC doesn't have to wait on the budget.
What we install
- Central AC (split systems) — matched condenser, coil, and air handler from Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, American Standard, Bryant, and Amana
- Heat pumps — cool and heat from one system, efficient through mild North Louisiana winters
- Ductless mini-splits — Daikin and Mitsubishi single- and multi-zone for additions, shops, and rooms that never stay comfortable
- Full-system replacements — condenser, coil, line set, thermostat, and duct transitions done as one job
14 SEER2, 16 SEER2, or 18+?
14.3 SEER2 meets Louisiana code and is the budget pick — a solid, reliable single-stage system at the lowest upfront cost. 16 SEER2 is the sweet spot for most homes here: a real efficiency bump for a moderate price jump, with a two-stage compressor that pulls humidity out better. 18+ SEER2 with a variable-speed compressor runs the quietest, holds humidity down best, and pays back fastest given how many hours an AC runs in this climate. We show you the payback math for your actual home and let you pick — no pressure to buy up.
What Mark Johnson & Sons does differently
Old-unit removal, a properly pulled vacuum, a matched coil, a code-compliant line set, permit, inspection, and haul-off are all part of the job — not add-ons that show up later. We commission every install: verify airflow, charge to spec, confirm the temperature drop across the coil, and register the manufacturer warranty so it stays valid. Ask about our service savings agreement plans — it keeps the new system tuned every Spring and Fall and protects that warranty.

Warning signs
Signs It's Time to Replace, Not Repair
Repair usually wins on a newer unit. These are the signs replacement is the smarter money in a North Louisiana home.
System is 12–15+ years old and struggling to keep up
Uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out, expensive to recharge)
A failed or failing compressor — the priciest single repair
Repeated breakdowns two or more summers in a row
Rooms that never cool evenly no matter what you do
Summer electric bills climbing year over year
The house stays humid and sticky even when it's 'cooling'
Repair quote is approaching half the cost of a new system

Sized right, installed right
A load calc is the difference between comfortable and clammy.
Guess the size and you get a house that's cold and humid or a unit that never catches up. We run a Manual-J on every install so your new system fits your North Louisiana home — not a rule of thumb.

Compare
14 SEER2 vs. 16 SEER2 vs. 18+ SEER2
Higher efficiency costs more up front but pays back over a long Louisiana cooling season. Here's how the three tiers compare for a typical home here.
| Feature | 14.3 SEER2 | 16 SEER2 | 18+ SEER2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compressor | Single-stage | Two-stage | Variable-speed |

FAQ
AC Installation FAQs
How much does a new AC cost installed in North Louisiana?
A complete replacement — AC, matched coil, and air handler — is quoted as one flat-rate number covering old-unit removal, permit, and haul-off. What moves that number is the efficiency tier you pick (14–15 SEER2 standard, 16 SEER2 high-efficiency, 18+ SEER2 premium), the tonnage your home actually needs, and any duct or electrical work. We size the home with a load calc and give you the price before any work starts.
What SEER2 efficiency should I buy in Louisiana?
With our long, hot cooling season, efficiency pays back faster here than in cooler states. A 14.3 SEER2 system meets code and is the budget pick; 16 SEER2 is the value sweet spot with a two-stage compressor; and 18+ SEER2 variable-speed cuts summer bills the most and controls humidity best. We show you the payback math for your actual home and let you decide — no pressure.
Why does the load calculation matter so much?
Bigger isn't better. An oversized AC short-cycles — it cools the air fast but shuts off before it pulls the humidity out, leaving your house cold and clammy, which is miserable in North Louisiana. An undersized one runs nonstop. A Manual-J load calc sizes the system to your home so it dehumidifies properly and lasts longer. We run one on every install.
Should I repair my AC or replace it?
If the system is under 10–12 years old and the repair is small, repair it — we'll tell you so. Replacement makes sense with a failed compressor, an old R-22 unit, repeated breakdowns, or when a repair approaches half the cost of a new system. We give you honest numbers on both, not a sales pitch.
How long does an AC installation take?
A straightforward same-footprint replacement is usually a single day. Jobs that add or modify ductwork, convert to a heat pump, or install multi-zone mini-splits can run two days. We give you the timeline with the quote, and the crew protects your floors and cleans up before they leave.
Do heat pumps make sense in North Louisiana?
They can be a strong choice. A heat pump cools like a standard AC in summer and heats efficiently through our mild winters, often at a lower operating cost than a straight electric furnace. For an all-electric home or one replacing an aging AC and electric furnace together, a heat pump is worth a serious look. We'll run the numbers for your setup.
Are there rebates or tax credits on a high-efficiency AC?
Often, yes. Qualifying high-SEER2 systems and heat pumps can be eligible for the federal 25C energy-efficiency tax credit, and manufacturers run seasonal rebates on select equipment. We flag what your chosen system qualifies for and hand you the paperwork — ask when you book so we factor it into the numbers.
Do you install every AC brand?
We install and service every major brand — Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, American Standard, Bryant, and Amana — plus Daikin and Mitsubishi for ductless mini-splits. We'll match the equipment to your budget and home rather than push one label, and we stock parts for what we install so future service is fast.
Do you handle the permit and old-unit removal?
Every install includes the permit, inspection, and removal, disposal, and recycling of your old equipment — it's baked into the flat-rate quote. Louisiana requires a licensed contractor and permit for AC replacement, and we handle all of it in-house. Ask about the service savings agreement to keep the new system tuned and under warranty.
Do you warranty the new system?
Yes. New equipment carries the manufacturer's parts warranty — typically 10 years when registered, which we do for you — plus our own labor warranty on the installation. Keeping up with annual tune-ups (included in the service savings agreement) is usually required to keep the manufacturer coverage valid, so we make that easy.
Do you offer financing on a new AC?
Yes. A dead AC in a Louisiana July can't always wait for the budget to catch up, so we offer financing with a range of terms, including low- and no-interest options on approved credit. Ask when you book and we'll go over the options along with any manufacturer rebates or tax credits you qualify for.
