Overview

Comfort Where Ductwork Can't Reach

Some spaces just never get comfortable — a converted garage, a sunroom, a bonus room over the garage, a home office, a workshop, or an addition the original system was never sized to cover. A ductless mini-split fixes that without tearing into walls to run ducts. Mark Johnson & Sons sizes, installs, and services mini-splits across Ruston, Monroe, West Monroe, and Grambling.

A mini-split pairs a small outdoor condenser with one or more indoor heads, each with its own thermostat, so you only condition the space you're actually using. That's efficient in Louisiana's long cooling season, and because most units are heat pumps, they take the chill off our mild winters too — right down through the occasional hard freeze. They run quiet, and with no ducts there's no 20–30% duct loss dragging down efficiency.

What we install and service

  • Single-zone systems — one outdoor unit, one head, for a single room, garage, or shop (typically 9,000–24,000 BTU)
  • Multi-zone systems — one condenser feeding 2–5 indoor heads, each independently controlled
  • Head styles — wall-mount, ceiling cassette, and low-wall/floor console units
  • Brands we install and service — Mitsubishi, Daikin, plus Fujitsu, LG, and the mini-split lines from Carrier and Bryant

Single-zone vs. multi-zone

One head handles one open space beautifully — a shop, a sunroom, a master bedroom. When you're conditioning a whole addition or several rooms that each need their own setting, a multi-zone condenser feeding separate heads is the right call. We size to the room's actual heat load, not a rule of thumb, so you don't pay for zones or tonnage you don't need — an oversized mini-split short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out, which matters in our climate. A single-zone unit is also the cheapest, most efficient way to solve one stubborn room without touching the central system that's already handling the rest of the house.

What Mark Johnson & Sons does differently

We pull a real vacuum on every line set and verify the charge before we call it done — a rushed install that skips this is the number-one reason a mini-split fails early in our humidity. Our own licensed techs run the line set through a small, tidy penetration, mount the head level so the condensate drains right, and register the manufacturer warranty. Ask about our service savings agreement plans — your mini-split gets covered in the Spring AC tune-up along with priority scheduling and 15% off any repair.

Warning signs

When a mini-split is the right call

Ductless shines in the spots a central system struggles with — and it's the practical fix when running ductwork isn't.

  • A room that's always hotter or colder than the rest of the house

  • A garage, shop, or sunroom with no ductwork at all

  • An addition or bonus room the central system can't keep up with

  • A home office or nursery that needs its own temperature

  • You want to cool one zone without running the whole system

  • An older home with no ducts where adding them isn't practical

  • High electric bills from cooling rooms nobody's using

  • A window unit you're tired of hauling in and out — and hearing

  • A garage apartment or she-shed you want comfortable year-round

Ductless mini-split cooling a comfortable North Louisiana room

Efficient & quiet

Cool the room you're in, not the whole house.

With no ducts to leak and a thermostat per zone, a mini-split only conditions the space you're using — efficient through a long Louisiana summer, and heat-pump warm on cool days.

The Process

How a mini-split installation goes

On the truck

Professional tools, parts, and diagnostics — every call.

  1. Assess the space

We look at the room, its heat load, insulation, and how you use it to recommend single-zone or multi-zone and the right capacity — sized to the load, not guessed.

  2. Flat-rate quote

You get the price up front, with honest options — you don't pay for more zones than you need. Financing available.

  3. Clean install

We mount the indoor head(s) and outdoor unit, run the line set through a small, tidy penetration, set the condensate line to drain right, and seal it up.

  4. Charge & commission

We pull a proper vacuum, verify the refrigerant charge to spec, and test heating and cooling on every zone.

  5. Walkthrough

We set up the controls and remotes, register the warranty, and show you how to run it efficiently.

FAQ

Ductless Mini-Split FAQs

Are mini-splits good for the Louisiana climate?

Very. Our long, humid cooling season is exactly where ductless efficiency pays off, and since most units are heat pumps they handle our mild winters too. No duct loss means more of what you pay for actually reaches the room.

Can one mini-split cool my whole house?

Usually not from a single head — mini-splits shine at zoning specific spaces. A multi-zone system with several indoor heads can cover a whole home or a large addition. We'll size it to what you actually need rather than sell you extra tonnage.

How much does a ductless mini-split cost?

For North Louisiana homes, a single-zone system is the entry point, each added zone raises it, and a 3–4 head multi-zone system for a whole addition sits at the top end. We quote flat-rate after seeing the space, and financing is available.

Mini-split vs. central AC — which makes more sense?

If you already have good ductwork and want whole-home comfort, central AC is usually the better value. If you're cooling an addition, a garage, a shop, or one stubborn room — or the house has no ducts — a mini-split is more efficient and cheaper to install than extending ducts. We'll give you the honest comparison for your situation.

Are they noisy?

No — that's one of the big advantages. The compressor is outside and the indoor heads run very quietly, which is why they're popular for bedrooms, offices, and nurseries. A window unit is far louder.

Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?

Most do. Modern inverter heat pumps put out solid heat well below freezing, so a single system covers you through both a Louisiana summer and our occasional hard freezes — no separate heater needed in the space.

How long does a mini-split last?

A properly installed and maintained mini-split runs 15–20 years — longer than most window units by a wide margin. The keys are a correct charge at install, level mounting so condensate drains, and an annual cleaning of the indoor head so mold and biofilm don't build up on the blower wheel.

Do you service mini-splits, or only install them?

Both. We repair and maintain ductless systems — control boards, capacitors, refrigerant leaks, condensate issues — as well as install them. Service members get their mini-split covered in the Spring AC tune-up along with priority scheduling and 15% off repairs.

Do I need a permit for a mini-split, and can I DIY a kit one?

Louisiana pulls a permit for a mini-split install because it involves electrical and refrigerant work. The DIY 'pre-charged' kits sold online almost always end up undercharged or leaking in our heat and void the manufacturer warranty — we install to spec, pull a real vacuum, and register the warranty so you're covered.

How fast can you come out for a mini-split that quit?

Same-day is standard during business hours, and we answer live 24/7. If your only source of cooling or heat is down, we treat it as urgent and dispatch fast — an after-hours surcharge applies on top of the repair.
