Overview
Bathroom sink clogs are 95% hair and soap — and 95% fixable in one visit
When a bathroom sink stops draining, it's almost always a hair-and-soap mat tangled around the pop-up stopper or a few inches into the trap. Long hair gets caught on the stopper, soap scum builds around the hair, and within a year you've got a felt-like wad that water can't flow through. We pull the stopper, clean the trap, and cable the line in 30-45 minutes flat. Most clogs never need anything more aggressive than a hand auger.
Bathroom sink clogs differ from kitchen clogs in two important ways: they're rarely caused by grease, and they're usually within 18 inches of the drain. That makes them faster and cheaper to clear, with less risk of pushing the clog deeper.
What we clear
- Hair + soap mat at the stopper — the #1 bathroom sink clog. Pull the stopper, clean it, done.
- Hair clog deeper in the trap — past the stopper but before the wall. Trap removal + hand cable.
- Toothpaste / cosmetic / shaving cream buildup — sticky residue that grabs hair and scale.
- Foreign objects — hair tie, jewelry, kid's toy, contact lens. We catch in the bucket, return what's worth returning.
- Pop-up stopper failure — clog gone but stopper won't seal/seat properly anymore. Replace the pop-up assembly.
- Vent or downstream issues — gurgling after drain clears, multiple bathrooms backing up at once. Different fix.
What we use
- Stopper pull + manual clean — most bathroom clogs, 15-30 minutes
- Trap drop + hand cable — clog past the stopper, 30-60 minutes
- Drum auger — rare for bathroom sinks; only when the clog is well past the trap
- Pop-up assembly replacement — old/corroded stopper that grabs every clog
Bathroom clog issues in North Louisiana
Hard water builds calcium scale on the inside of the trap and the pop-up linkage. Hair grabs scale, soap builds on hair, and the cycle accelerates. Soft-water homes have noticeably fewer recurrent clogs.
Old chrome pop-ups on vintage North Louisiana homes (1950s-70s vanities) are often pitted and rough — they catch hair like Velcro. Replacing the pop-up assembly with a modern lift-and-turn or push-pull design eliminates 80% of recurring hair clogs.

Warning signs
Signs Your Bathroom Sink Is Clogged
Catch it slow — a slow drain becomes standing water in 1-2 weeks of normal use.
Water drains slowly, takes 20+ seconds to clear basin
Standing water in the basin after washing hands
Pop-up stopper won't seal or seat properly
Bad smell coming from the drain
Gurgling sound when water finally drains
Hair visibly visible on the pop-up when lifted
Sink takes 5+ minutes to fully empty
Water bubbles back up briefly after running
Repeated clog within 30-60 days of last clearing
Two bathrooms backing up at once (mainline issue, not branch)

The Process
How a Bathroom Sink Clog Call Works

On the truck
Professional tools, parts, and diagnostics — every call.
Quick assessment
Tech tests the sink, lifts the pop-up to check for hair, and diagnoses whether the clog is at the stopper, in the trap, or past the wall. Most bathroom clogs are at the stopper or trap — fast fix.
Flat-rate quote
Stopper clean, trap drop + cable, or pop-up replacement — you see all three prices before we start. We default to the smallest tool that will clear the clog.
Pull stopper + clean
Lift the pop-up, pull the linkage, clean off the hair and soap mat into a bucket. Reset the stopper and test. About half the time, this alone clears the clog.
Drop trap + cable if needed
If clog persists past the stopper, we drop the trap, run a small hand cable through the wall stub-out, work the clog free. 30-60 minutes for a standard cable job.
Test full flow
Run the sink fully open for 60+ seconds, fill basin and release with stopper closed and open, listen for gurgles. Verify drain rate matches a clean line.
30-day warranty
Same clog comes back within 30 days, we re-clear at no charge. Most bathroom clogs stay cleared 1-3+ years with normal use.

FAQ
Bathroom Sink Clog FAQs
How much does it cost to unclog a bathroom sink in North Louisiana?
A stopper pull and clean — the #1 bathroom clog — is the cheapest fix and the most common one. If the clog is past the stopper and we have to drop the trap and cable the line, it steps up from there. Replacing a worn-out pop-up assembly that's catching every clog is a separate line item. All flat-rate, quoted before we start.
Why does my bathroom sink keep clogging?
Almost always hair plus soap. Long hair catches on the pop-up stopper, soap scum builds on the hair, and within months you have a felt mat. Fix: drop a $35 hair guard into the drain, OR replace the old chrome pop-up with a modern lift-and-turn assembly. Both eliminate 80% of repeat clogs.
Can I unclog a bathroom sink myself?
Lift the pop-up and clean it manually first — that clears half of all bathroom clogs in 5 minutes. If that doesn't work, a small drain auger from the hardware store ($15) often does. NEVER use chemical drain cleaners (Drano, Liquid Plumr) — they corrode chrome traps, ruin pop-up rubber seals, and make our snake job harder.
What's the difference between a kitchen and bathroom sink clog?
Kitchen clogs are mostly grease and food scraps, often deeper in the line (3-6 feet). Bathroom clogs are mostly hair and soap, almost always within 18 inches of the drain. Bathroom clogs are faster and cheaper to clear because they're closer to the access point.
How do I prevent bathroom sink clogs?
Three things. First, drop a hair guard over the drain — a couple of dollars at any hardware store. Second, lift and clean the pop-up monthly — 30 second job, prevents 90% of clogs. Third, every 6 months pour 1 cup baking soda + 1 cup white vinegar down the drain, let sit 15 minutes, flush with hot water — breaks up early-stage soap scum.
My pop-up stopper won't go up or down. Is that a clog?
Could be. Could also be the linkage rod underneath the sink has popped off the lift arm. Open the cabinet under the sink, look at the back of the drain pipe — there's usually a horizontal rod connecting the lift handle to the stopper. If it's disconnected, just pop it back on. If the linkage itself is corroded, we can replace the pop-up assembly, quoted flat-rate.
Why does my bathroom sink smell bad?
Two possibilities. First, biofilm buildup on the inside of the pop-up and overflow — clean those with hot water + dish soap and a small brush. Second, dry P-trap (sink hasn't been used in weeks) — sewer gas comes up. Run water for 30 seconds. If smell is persistent, the trap arm or vent could be wrong — call us.
What if both bathrooms are backing up at once?
That's a mainline issue, not a sink branch issue. The clog is past where the bathrooms meet — usually in the building drain or sewer line. Different job, different price — mainline cable clearing is quoted separately. We diagnose with a camera if needed.
Do you offer a plumbing maintenance plan that covers drains?
Yes. Service Savings Agreement Plan ($189/year) includes an annual home plumbing inspection and one drain camera inspection per year. Catches early-stage clogs and pipe issues before they become emergencies. Service members get 15% off any clog clearing or repair.
